A comedian impersonating Barack Obama at a gathering of Republican activists was ushered offstage after making series of racially tinged jokes about the president’s biracial background.
The incident is proving an embarrassment for the Republican Party, which faces an uphill battle to attract minority voters in the 2012 election.
The nearly all-white audience at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans laughed raucously when Reggie Brown, a regular Obama impersonator, said that while first lady Michelle Obama celebrated all of the annual Black History Month, Mr Obama, whose father was black and mother was white, celebrated only half.
Forecasting how the Obamas would look later life, he flashed up a photograph of poor and quarrelsome African Americans from the 1970s television show Sanford and Son, an American equivalent of Steptoe and Son.
