RAF To Use 'Bunker Busting', May 29 2011

UK Daily Mail

RAF pilots are to use 2,000 lb ‘bunker-busting’ bombs to destroy Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi’s key command centres.

The 14ft-long, laser-guided Enhanced Paveway III (EPWIII) bombs – designed to punch through reinforced concrete – are expected to be deployed within days on RAF Typhoon and Tornado jets flying from Nato’s base in Gioia del Colle, Italy.

The bombs were used in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and are so accurate they can be aimed at ventilation shafts in buildings ten miles away.

The arrival of EPWIIIs adds to an arsenal of RAF air-to-ground weapons, which are designed to strike targets while minimising collateral damage and protecting civilians.

The move comes days after Prime Minister David Cameron revealed that Britain is sending Apache helicopters to attack Gaddafi’s key installations.
